Minutes of the Meeting of the Hibernian Society of Baltimore September
9th, 2003

1. Dennis Connelly opened the meeting at 7:00 pm at the An Poitin Still.
2. A prayer was offered by Jay Kerney.
3. The minutes from the June meeting were waived and accepted in without a
reading.
4. No old business was brought in for discussion
5. Special announcement was made by Dennis Connelly in conjunction with
Patrick Dyer regarding a project they have been working with MBNA for a
number of months. We, the Hibernian Society of Baltimore will be recipients
of donations from the MBNA Emerald card. A check was deposited in the
scholarship account in the amount of $9,400 for residuals made from this
credit card for the month of May. It is hoped that between now and January
2004 a total of approximately $80,000 will be made to the Hibernian
Society of Baltimore to further scholarships of children in needs seeking
two and four-year educational grants. Philip Lazatti, a director of card
operations with MBNA, was available to answer questions and is also
becoming a new member. Ted Herget made a motion to send a letter of
thanks to the president and CEO at MBNA, which was passed without
descent.
6. Membership director, Pat Dyer, introduced four (4) new members into the
Society: Jeff Gill, M.D., William Bums, Phil Lazzitti, and Terry McDonald.
All were voted upon and approved.
7. Irish Website: Patrick Dyer again was called upon to state that we are
working to have common website designed for the Society and cost will be
researched and disclosed at a future meeting.
8. A membership cocktail party at the An Poitin Still will be researched by
Patrick Dyer and is hoped that the membership will participate.
9. The Irish Festival will be held on September 19th through the 21st, 2003,
at the Fifth Regiment Amory downtown. The Society has the whiskey booth
and it is fairly manned at this point. The Hibernian Society of Baltimore will
have ushers for the mass on Sunday, September 21st and the donation from
the mass will go to our scholarship fund. The Society was designated to a
draw during the last Irish Festival meeting.
10. Treasurer’s report: Larry Snyder indicated that the general scholarship
fund had an amount of $6,147.14. The scholarship fund had an amount of
$1,508.45. Larry reported that the Society tax returns have been filed
along with all of our tax exempt-status forms.
11. Financial report was given by John Flanigan. It was noted that as of the
quarterly
meeting, September 9th, 2003, the total asset value of the scholarship fund
was $307,176.74. This represents an increase in both donations and
investment income.
12. Scholarship report: Dave McNamara, III reported that we presently
have seven (7) scholarships awarded, two of which have been paid for the
fall semester and we are still awaiting bills from our other five (5)
recipients. A meeting will be held on September 22nd, with the scholarship
and finance committees to discuss if the present dollar amount awarded of
$2,500 annually can be increased with the expected influx of donations
from the MBNA plan and other activities within the Society.
13. Services committee: it was noted that James Keelty sadly passed away.
The Society sent flowers in recognition of his death.
14. Golf outing with the St. Andrew's Society has been canceled for this
year and they look forward to working with us in the future. They do have a
group that meets monthly if anyone within the Society would have an interest
in attending.
15. Banquet committee report: the 201st Hibernian Society of Baltimore
banquet will be held on Thursday, March 11th, 2004. The Hibernian of the
Year will be Kim Mahoney,
Esquire. The toastmaster will be the Honorable Gordon Boone. The talks are
underway
with the possible guest speaker of Tim McNamara. It is hopeful that the
committees will be meeting in the next two months to continue forward with
the groundwork that has already been laid.
16. New business: Bill Bums brought up the Irish Shrine of Lemmon of
Lemmon Street and encourages the Society membership to take advantage of
this Baltimore attraction.
Jeremy North indicated that there are still bricks available for purchase in
support of the Irish Shrine on Lemmon Street.
17. The Christmas dinner will be held on December 9th, 2003 at the L
'Hirondelle Club. A brief meeting will be held. The nominating committee
headed by Ted Herget will also offer the slate of officers for the 2004-
2005 term.
18. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm by Dennis Connelly, president.
